Realistic eye with a tear on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a single open eye with a dark iris, detailed lashes and a bright highlight on the eyelid, with a tear running down the cheek. Soft grey shading builds depth around the lid and brow, while the tear is rendered with pale highlights. The eye fills most of the frame against plain skin, with a wooden floor visible in the background.

The onions had been cut for an hour before Hettie Marr noticed the carpenter in the galley hatch, one hand on the ladder, watching her wipe her face with the back of her wrist. "Onions," she said before he could ask. Silas Greave snorted. He had painted the Sorrel's eyes himself, two of them on the bow, and he knew a lie when it came down the companionway with the steam. "Onions don't make a body hold their breath like that," he said, and came down anyway, ducking under the beam where the lamp swung.

He had painted the figurehead's left eye open and the right one nearly shut, the way the owner wanted it for the Bristol run. Then in March the squall took young Danny Pell off the foredeck, and the next morning Silas climbed out along the bowsprit with a rag of lampblack and a brush no bigger than a darning needle. Hettie watched from the galley door as he worked the grey into the lid, then the lashes, then a single bead that ran down the carved cheek and stopped at the jaw. He told the captain it was weathering. Nobody on the crew believed him, and nobody asked him to take it off.
Now Silas sat on the flour sack turning his cap in his hands while Hettie scraped the last of the onions into the pot. "You'll wear it out, staring at her like that," she said. "Somebody should," he said. The pot began to tick and bubble. Hettie laid the knife down, dried her hands on her apron, and climbed the companionway into the grey light, where the painted tear on the bow caught the morning sun and held it, bright as something that had finally been allowed to fall.
