Realistic inscribed ring on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A photograph of a forearm tattoo showing a ring with script lettering, rendered with smooth shading and highlights so it appears three-dimensional. Behind the ring is a dark, partly obscured figure in muted blues and greys, with warm orange and red tones in the ring and lettering. The ring sits centrally across the forearm, with the wrist and hand visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sorrel Vane had been told the stair in Harrowmere keep went down nine times, and she counted every one by the light of a stub of candle. The rubble below smelled of wet iron. At the bottom, where a drain had once carried the moat in, lay a band of dull metal no wider than a finger. When she lifted it, the letters running round its inner face caught her flame and seemed to glow, the way coals do when someone breathes on them.

She had come for the bell-founder's tally, a debt her uncle swore was still owed to him. The castle had been empty for forty years, and nobody had mentioned that the ring would be warm. She slipped it on to see if it fitted, and the cold of the cellar left her hand all at once. From the far wall came the sound of someone drawing a breath that was not hers.

The figure there had no face she could hold on to, only a grey hood and a hand that was patient. "You have found the one thing my master lost," it said, in the flat voice of a clerk reading out a bill. "Keep it, and you will never be cold again." Sorrel thought of her uncle's empty hearth and the tally in her pocket. She tugged the ring off. It stuck at the knuckle, then came free with a sound like a cork leaving a bottle.

She dropped it into the drain. The letters flared once as it sank, and the water hissed. When she turned back, the far wall was only stone and old damp, and her candle had gone out. She climbed the nine steps by feel, counting aloud, and at the top she found the tally folded inside her coat, its ink still wet, as though someone had been writing it while she was gone.
