Realistic pickle tattoo on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A single large pickle, shown upright and slightly curved, fills most of the frame against pale skin. The shading uses soft gradients, pale highlights along the top and dark green speckles that suggest the bumpy skin of a gherkin. The palette is limited to shades of green with a dark outline, and the subject sits centrally with plain background.

The pickle was already sweating in its jar when Mab Loveday hauled the trestle under the big top and told the crowd it was the longest gherkin in Devon. Nobody had measured it. Nobody needed to. It had come up from the brine bent like a question, speckled and bright as a hedgerow after rain, and the lads at the coconut shy went quiet when they saw it.

Her father had grown it, or said he had, in a cold frame behind the wagons at Chard. He grew it the summer the fair lost its horses to the bailiffs, and he talked to it every evening over the pickling crock, telling it about the towns they had not yet reached. Mab thought this foolishness until the night the rain came sideways across the field and the wagons began to sink. The pickle sat on the windowsill and glowed green as a lamp, and the mud stayed off the boards.
Folk came from three parishes to see it. A farmer offered a sack of seed potatoes. A widow offered her late husband's fiddle. Mab took neither. She said the pickle was not for sale, and that a thing grown on a promise should go where the promise pointed.
So in October, when the fair packed up for winter, she carried the jar down to the harbour wall and set it on the flat stone where her father used to sit. The tide came in under the rocks and took it, slow and unhurried. Mab walked home along the lane with empty hands. The wind came round to the west that night, and the lane smelt of salt until spring.
