Minion character on a calf
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon Minion character stands front-on with wide eyes behind a grey-rimmed pair of goggles, a small open mouth and sparse dark hair. Its blue overalls, black shoes and gloves are shaded smoothly, with a soft shadow beneath the feet. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame on the calf, with another tattoo partly visible at the right edge.

Nobody in Hollin Parva had ordered a yellow creature with goggles, but on the Tuesday after the harvest supper there was one sitting on the lych gate, swinging its boots and eating a whole jar of my damson jam with a teaspoon. I was the postwoman then, so I felt it was my business. It looked up at me with its enormous round eyes, pressed a glove to its mouth, and said something that sounded like bello, then something that sounded like a sneeze.

Its overalls were the blue of a cold pond, and the eye-shaped button on its bib made me uneasy. I asked it, very slowly, the way you talk to a dog that has got into the bins, whether it was lost. It nodded so hard its tufts of hair flopped. Then it took a folded map from a pocket, handed it over, and pointed at the edge of Crowfield Wood, where someone had drawn a cross in red crayon.
We went in together, which I still cannot explain to the vicar. The path wound past the old charcoal burners' clearing and under the beeches, and every time I stopped to catch my breath the creature stopped too, shuffling its black shoes in the leaf litter and blinking at me as though I were the strange one. Near the cross we found a tin box wedged in a hollow stump, full of wrapped sweets and a letter addressed to Mr Eustace Pell, who had died in 1961.
I read the letter aloud while the creature listened with its head on one side. Then it tucked the box under one arm and walked straight back out past the lych gate without a word. My round was an hour late that day. I still have the shilling it left on the gatepost to cover the jam, pressed flat in my purse.
