Cartoon block with purple filling on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A simple cartoon-style tattoo of a rounded rectangular block, shown in a three-quarter view with a cut edge revealing a purple-pink filling. The linework is a clean black outline with soft shading on the top face and along one side. Muted pink, brown and purple inks are used, and the tattoo sits on a hairy forearm against a background of green leaves and small white flowers.

Her nephew Tomas, who did the deliveries on a bicycle with a wicker basket, said it needed a new story. "Tell them it's a secret," he said. "Tell them the purple is a river and the outside is the hills."
She didn't say it, but she did cut it differently. One morning she sliced it end-on so the filling showed like a ribbon through a cliff face, and propped a card beside it that read: The river goes through the hill. Customers who had walked past for years stopped. A man in a wet coat bought the whole thing and asked for it wrapped in brown paper, and by noon there was a queue down to the postbox.
The cake was gone by teatime. Mrs Ostler fished the card out of the bin, turned it over, and wrote on the back in pencil: Next week, the sea. Then she went to find more plums.
