Pea pod and carrot holding hands

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon pea pod with a smiling face on the left and a cartoon carrot with a leafy top on the right, each with stick-like arms and legs, joined by holding hands. A small red heart sits between the two characters. The linework is simple and bold, with flat fills in green, orange and red and soft shading on the vegetables, set against a plain area of skin with a green and yellow fabric in the background.

Nobody on the allotments along Hollin Row had ever seen a pea and a carrot share a bed, so the whole row had opinions. Edie, the pea, was long and green and proud of her ladder of pods, and she looked down her nose at the carrot two plots over, who grew half out of the soil and wore her leaves like a bad hat. 'Orange is no colour for a vegetable,' Edie told the runner beans, loudly enough for the carrot to hear. The carrot, whose name was Sid, said nothing at all, which only made Edie crosser.

The frost came in April, the worst anyone on the row could remember. Walter Pell found the two of them at dawn, pressed against the water butt under a single hessian sack, rime thick on their leaves. Neither had moved all night. Edie's pods were white at the tips and Sid's crown had gone soft, and when Walter lifted the sack they both looked up at him as though he had interrupted something important.

Nobody said sorry. Edie said the wind had been bitter and Sid said it had, and that was the whole of the apology. By June they were swapping stakes and taking turns with the one good fork. Walter noticed that the tin of cocoa on the shed sill had been moved an inch closer to the window, so that anyone passing on the path could see the pair of them leaning on the fence.

That autumn a scrap of red card appeared pinned to the shed door, cut in the shape of a heart, and nobody on the row would admit to putting it there.
