The key fits. I know you asked me not to bother, but on Thursday I took a cup of tea down to the bottom of Dad's garden with the bunch from the hook in the kitchen, and the little brass one with the rosette on its bow turned in the padlock of the potting shed as if it had been waiting forty years to be asked. Inside, everything was where he left it. Twine on the nail, a tin of sweet pea seed gone soft at the corners, and his string of blue glass beads hanging off the spade handle like a rosary.
I sat on the upturned crate for an hour. The rose by the back wall has run wild over the fence, and when I cut a stem to bring in, the thorns caught my wrist and I laughed out loud, because he always said the Albertine would have us both in the ground before he went. Pressed into the lid of an old biscuit tin were three red glass stones I had never seen before. I think they were his way of keeping the good bits for later.
So I am writing to say I am keeping the shed. Not as a museum. I will take the key off the ring and put it on a ribbon, and I will plant the cutting in the bed under the kitchen window, where you can see it from the sink. If you still want the house sold, come and argue with the roses yourself.
