Black and grey realistic rose tattoo with cursive script above it on a forearm, with the hand raised in the frame.

Realistic rose and script on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large realistic rose with shaded petals, a closed bud and dark leaves covers the inner forearm and wrist, with a line of cursive script written above it. The rose uses smooth grey shading and fine dark outlines, and the script is in thin dark ink; part of the lettering is rotated, so it is not fully legible. The photograph is taken at an angle with the hand raised against a dark background, and the tattoo fills the lower half of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The roses along the back wall had gone to hips by the time Nell's letter reached the rectory, and Mrs Pargeter read it standing at the gate with her gloves still on. It was written in pencil on the back of a seed catalogue. Nell said the Albertine had finally climbed over the coal shed, that the bud on the east arch would not open no matter how she talked to it, and that she had buried the tin of Dad's shag under the greenhouse step because nobody would think to look there.

The last line was the one that stopped her. Nell had written it twice, once straight and once turned sideways up the margin, as though she could not decide which way it should face. Mrs Pargeter turned the page round to read it properly. Grey shadows, she thought, the kind Nell had always pressed too hard with the pencil, so the paper came up shiny underneath.

She went inside, put the kettle on, and found her good reading glasses. Then she sat by the window and looked out at the wall, where the bud had split overnight into a pale dark thing like a fist opening, and the petals were already pulling back from the heart of it. She wrote three lines on the margin in reply, then crossed out the second, because a bud that had decided to open did not need a letter telling it so.
