Realistic wolf and peonies on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A grey-shaded wolf head faces forward with pale eyes, filling the upper part of the thigh. Soft smooth shading gives the fur depth, and the wolf's eyes and nose are rendered in fine detail. Pink peonies and green leaves wrap around the lower edge of the wolf in colour, while the wolf itself stays in black and grey.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the nets. My grandfather told this on the quay at Skerra the winter the herring failed, and I will tell it the way he did, slow, because a wolf does not come down to the shore in a hurry.

The grey wolf came out of the hills the year the Mary Lennox and her crew went out past the skerries and never came back. Nobody saw him take anything. He sat on the rocks below the chapel with his pale eyes fixed on the water, and the widows who carried salt fish down for the gulls found they could not look at him for long. Old Mairi Ross, who grew peonies in tubs along her wall because they would not survive the wind on the open ground, went down one morning with a bowl of broth and set it on the stone.
She said the wolf ate nothing. Instead he took the pink blooms she had cut and carried them, one at a time, up the track to the place where the boats had been lost. Each morning there were fewer petals on her wall and more on the path. By March the fleet had come home through the fog, every man of them, and nobody agrees on whether the wolf brought them in or only showed the way.
What I know is that the wolf was never seen again, and the peonies on Mairi's wall came back that spring, redder than before, and she would not let anyone cut them. Pull your collars up. That is the end of it, and the tide is turning.
