Black and grey wolf head tattoo on the outer thigh, half in geometric linework and half in realistic shading, with blue eyes.

Half geometric, half realistic wolf on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A wolf's head is split down the middle, with the left half drawn in geometric black linework of interlocking facets and the right half rendered in soft realistic shading with fur detail. The wolf's eyes are the only colour, both picked out in pale blue. The design fills the outer thigh and is photographed straight on against a yellow wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ruth, you will not credit what Mr Harrowby did on Saturday night. He stopped the band halfway through a quickstep, climbed onto the bandstand with a paraffin lamp and told us all to look up at the wolf over the bar. Nobody has looked at that picture since his father bought it from a travelling man in Keighley. Half of it is cut into little glass-coloured facets, every edge ruled as neat as a surveyor's plan. The other half is soft, brushed so fine you could swear the fur moved when the door opened.

The lamp caught the eyes, and they were the only thing in the room not sorted into one half or the other. Both of them a pale blue, like the sky over the reservoir on a February morning. Mr Harrowby said the wolf had decided to keep its sharp half for the town and its soft half for the dark, and that a person could be either sort of wolf on any given night. Mrs Oakes said that was daft talk and sent the girls back to their partners, but I saw her look up at it twice before the next waltz.

I danced with Walter Pye, who has a ruined hand from the mill and cannot hold a lead properly. He said the eyes were the only honest bit, because the rest was put together to look like something else, and the eyes just looked back. I laughed at him. I am not laughing now, because I think I have been cutting myself into neat pieces for a year so that Father would not see the soft part. Come home at Easter. Bring the blue ribbon you promised. Your loving sister, Edie.
