Realistic wolf head on upper chest
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large wolf head faces forward across the upper chest, close to the collarbone and shoulder. The fur is rendered with soft, layered grey shading and fine directional strokes, with darker tones around the ears and nose. The eyes carry a faint amber tint, and the framing is a close crop on the skin with the top edge of the shoulder and a blurred background visible.

Dear Tomas, the apples came in heavy this year, so Father has hired two boys from the Mill Road cottages to pick, and I have stopped pretending I am not frightened of the north hedge. The grey dog is back. I know you will say it is only a farm dog gone wild, but I saw it properly on Tuesday, when the light had gone thin and gold along the rows, and it was not a dog.

It stood at the end of the Bramley row with its head low, the way a sheep dog stands when it is deciding. Its coat was grey as wet slate, darker along the back and the ears, lighter at the throat, and the fur lay in long, combed strokes as if the wind had been brushing it all day. When it lifted its muzzle, its eyes caught the sun and went the colour of cider held up to a window. I did not move. I think it was the stillness that let it decide I was no threat.
It did not take anything. That is what I keep returning to. The windfalls were rotting under it and the chickens were sleeping in the coop with the door shut, and it walked off between the trees the way a man leaves a room he has finished with. By morning there was only a line of paw prints in the dew and one perfect pear, bitten clean on one side, set on the gatepost like a gift.
Father says I should leave the pear. I have not. It is on the windowsill now, going soft, and I keep checking it, as if the wolf might come back for its manners. Come home before the harvest ends. Bring the good knife. I would rather you laughed at me in person.
