Rebel Rebel script with lightning bolt

Lettering · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the words Rebel Rebel written twice in a bold, looping script, with teal and purple shading inside black outlines. A red lightning bolt with a blue edge sits to the right, and yellow and purple diamonds with small teal sparkles surround the lettering. The colours are saturated and the outlines are crisp, set against plain skin in a close, straight-on photograph.

At ten past two the ward was quiet enough to hear the drip counters clicking, so when Mr Lowry's son came up the corridor with a cassette player under his arm I took it as a sign something had gone wrong. The tape was wrapped in a sandwich bag, its spine taped twice, and the label said GLAM in biro capitals. Sister Pryce wanted it gone before the lights dimmed. I told her the man in bed four had been humming the same tune all week, in the only voice he had left.

I first heard that song at twenty-two, in the back of a borrowed hatchback with the windows fogged and my cousin's boyfriend singing it out of tune. None of us believed in much except the next gig and the next bus home, but we all wanted to look like people nobody could tell to sit down. The riff sounded like a door being kicked open. Mr Lowry had worked nights on the buses for thirty years and used to say he'd once seen a man in silver lamé fall off a stage in Sheffield and get straight up, grinning.

The son pressed play and the tinny guitar filled the bay, bouncing off the curtains and the cold metal of the bed rails. Mr Lowry's eyes opened. He didn't speak, but one heel started knocking the rail under the sheet, slow and then faster, right on the beat. The monitor above him ticked along steadily, and for once nobody checked it.

Sister Pryce came round the curtain with her clipboard, took one look at the bed, and reached over to turn the volume up herself. "Rebel rebel," she said, not quite singing it, and went back to her desk without another word.
