Red and black line tattoos on fingers
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand is photographed against a background of green clover leaves. The middle finger carries red linework, including a curling spiral, several horizontal bands and a small dot, while the index finger has two thin black bands and a small cluster of red dots. The lines are simple and even, and the red and black ink sits clearly against the skin tone.

Nell Pardoe had counted the clover in Harrowby Meadow every morning since the first frost, because her grandmother swore a four-leafed stem would turn up for whoever kept faithful to the count. She never found one. What she found instead, one grey afternoon, was the Tally Man sitting on the stile with two little pots, one full of red ink and one full of black, and a brush he wiped on his coat between strokes.

He offered to mark her for the wages of her luck. Red for every favour asked, black for every promise kept. She laughed and held out her hand, the way you do when a stranger offers you something free. He drew the red spiral first, slow as a snail climbing a stalk, curling inward until the line almost vanished. Then came the bands across the finger, one for each winter she would be lucky, and two thin black rings beside them, because she had promised her brother the mill would be his when their father died.
The luck came as he'd said. The harvest filled the barns, and the husband she had prayed for came home off the Humber with his pay in his boots. Each favour she asked, the red crept a little further round, and the dots began to bloom at the knuckle, one for every seed she had taken from the meadow and never given back. She tried scrubbing at the spiral with salt and lemon. It only sank deeper, the colour of clover veins held up to the sun.
When the mill stood empty and her brother wrote to say he would not be coming home, Nell walked back to the stile. The Tally Man was gone. In his place lay a single four-lobed leaf, pressed flat, with the stem still wet. She picked it up, and started counting.
