Red BAD lettering on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of the side of a torso showing the word BAD tattooed in red ink on the ribs. The letters use bold, connected strokes with a loose, hand-lettered look, and the ink is solid with no shading. The pale skin and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoo, with a folded white cloth and a blurred background at the edges of the frame.

Maud Carrow kept the bed by the south wall bare for forty years. Over it hung a board she had painted herself, the letters BAD in red, bold and joined like a hedge that had grown into itself. Her mother had told her that the first gardener at Hollin House cursed that ground when his wife ran off, and that whatever you said over soil came up the way you said it.

Tobias, the miller's boy, came over the wall one October after pears. He dropped into the bed, read the board aloud, and asked why anyone would name a field that way. Maud, who had waited thirty years for someone to ask, sat on an upturned bucket and told him. "Words sink in," she said. "Let them sink into a bed and they come back up as weeds."
The boy stared at the dark soil, then knelt and pushed his fingers into it. "Then I'll tell it something good," he said, and he said it loudly and foolishly, "good, good, good," until she laughed at him. Maud did not argue. She fetched a paper of runner bean seed from the shed and gave him half.
In spring the bed was green to the wall. The beans had climbed the board and wound round the letters, so that by midsummer only the B and the D showed through the leaves. Maud never took the board down.
