Small red bow on a finger

Hand · Mixed · Photo

A small bow shape sits across the middle finger of a light-skinned hand, filled with red ink and outlined in black. A small circle marks the knot at the centre of the bow. The tattoo is shown in close, straight-on view against a dark background, with the other fingers and part of the palm side visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tags came off the hydroponic drum in a grey ribbon of Mylar, and someone had to knot each one to its seed packet before the ring-lift carried them down to Deck Nine. Nobody had asked me to use red thread. I did it anyway, because Odile Brenn, the clerk who trained me, kept a spool of scarlet under her bunk, and when I asked why, she shrugged and said it was the only knot she could tie without looking.

Thirty-one years on the Halvard run and I still tie it her way: two loops, a pinch at the centre, the tail tucked under. The pinch is the part that matters. It keeps the whole thing from slipping when the air hiss changes pitch during a burn, and Odile said a bow that held on a spinning ship would hold on anything. I believed her for a long time, right up until the crate from Kessler Reach came back with every tag still knotted and every bow sitting flat and neat.

The packets inside had been emptied and folded. Someone had cut the thread at each centre and tied it again with a single loop, the way you would tie a boot in a hurry. I stood in the cold bay with the lid open and understood that they had counted on our bows meaning sealed, and had used that trust to hide the theft in plain sight.

I wrote to the Reach that night. I did not ask who had done it. I asked for the scarlet spool back, and when it came, months later, wrapped in a note in an unfamiliar hand, I cut a length the width of a finger and began again, pinching each centre tight enough to hold.
