Mrs Ada Crane ran the telegraph tent at Haddon Fair, a canvas booth with a brass key bolted to a trestle and a painted board promising messages to anywhere in the kingdom for threepence. Nobody believed the wire ran past the Pump Ground, but the lads who worked the dodgem cars paid her to send their mothers the same few words every Sunday, and she never once asked what they said.

One wet September a boy called Tommy Vell came in with a crumpled sheet of paper and asked what the letter V sounded like on a key. I showed him: three short taps and one long, the way the old signal books had it. He wanted to send that to a girl in Scarborough, and he had exactly sevenpence in his pocket. I told him the wire would take it for nothing, because I had been sending nothing down it for years.
The fair moved on at the end of the month, and I thought no more about it until the following summer, when Tommy came back with his cap in his hands. He asked whether anything had come through for him. I told him the wire had carried nothing but my own tapping all winter. He looked at the key for a long while, then laid one finger on it and held it down, long, the way you would hold a door shut against the wind. I did not need him to tap anything else.
