Red dripping band on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows the outer upper arm of a person in a grey sleeveless top. A solid red band runs around the arm with a row of rounded drips hanging from its lower edge. The tattoo is a flat, solid block of one colour with no visible shading or fine linework, and the plain skin and white wall behind keep the focus on the band.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had dipped the cloth four times before the madder bath ran true, and by then the workshop smelled of wet earth and vinegar. She lifted the length on a stick and let it drain over the lip of the copper, watching the colour settle from orange to the deep brick it needed to be. Her brother had asked for a band that would show from across a yard, something the carters at the Fenton gate could read without stopping their horses.

Pete came in from the yard with his cap in his hands and rain on his shoulders. He said the checkpoint on the bridge had changed hands twice since noon, and the new men were taking anything without a seal. Ada knew what a seal meant. It was a stamp pressed into wax by a clerk who had never seen the river, and it cost four shillings every Thursday. She did not have four shillings. She had a bolt of cotton and a vat of red.

She cut the band so its top edge ran straight and its lower edge fell wrong on purpose, then drew each drip down the cloth with her thumb, the way their mother had taught them to finish a hem. The drips were the part the carters would remember. A man might mistake a plain red stripe for a flag, but nobody forgot colour running down toward the wrist.

At first light Pete pinned it above his elbow and walked out to the bridge without looking back. Ada stayed at the copper, scrubbing her hands until the red would not come off, and waited for the sound of the gate.
