Japanese · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two bold black kanji characters sit at the centre of the design, with red five-petalled flowers with orange centres and green leaves arranged on either side. Small loose red petals are scattered around the flowers. The black lines are solid and even, and the flowers are filled with flat red and orange shading, with a dark background behind the arm.

The wind came off the spoil heaps at a quarter past four, the way it always did when the cage was being wound up, and by the time Nell Tennant had dragged the washing off the line it had found the rose by her back gate. Tom had planted that bush the spring before the dust took his chest. Its flowers lasted a single week in June, and the gust took them all at once, a spinning column lifting over the privies and the chapel roof.

Ada came to the wall with a tea towel knotted over her hair. 'You'll not catch that,' she called. 'Nobody's caught a whirlwind yet.' Nell watched the column turn above the pit yard, grey with grit at its foot and red at its crown. Tom used to say a flame would climb if you let it, and the trick with the lamp was keeping your hand steady while it did.

She went out anyway, through the gate and down the cinder path, and the petals came to her like sparks. One settled on the lid of a dinner pail on the bench outside the lamp room. One caught in the collar of a boy too busy staring at the sky to brush it off. A third landed on the open page of the deputy's ledger, and he looked at it, then at her, and closed the book on it without a word.

The wind dropped as suddenly as it had risen. Nell stood with her hands empty and let the rest go where they liked. By supper the whole yard was freckled red, the coal dust under it and the petals on top, and the children ran through it shouting as if someone had finally paid the village something back.
