Snowflake tattoo on the ankle
Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink snowflake with six arms and a symmetrical geometric pattern is tattooed on the ankle of a person standing on a grey concrete surface. The design is built from clean lines and small branching details, shown in solid black and grey tones with no colour. The composition is a close, slightly angled shot from above, with the rolled denim cuffs and canvas shoes framing the tattoo.

The guard at the high pass had kept the crossing for thirty winters, and in all that time nobody had carried a snowflake over it without being asked for papers. So when the carter Ilse Varga came up the road in April with a sack of salt and a lantern that would not light, he stopped her at the barrier and told her to empty her pockets.

She had nothing in them but a brass button and a stub of pencil. He lifted the sack anyway, and under the salt he found a single flake pressed flat between two leaves of her grandmother's psalm book, six arms sharp as a needle's eye. "That is not mine to declare," she said. "It landed on my boot at the top of the pass last winter, and it has not melted since." The guard, whose name was Josef and whose wife lived in the lowlands, turned the pages over in his hands for a long time.
Snow, the old tellers said, does not cross borders. It only falls where the ground has forgotten its owner. The rules at the barrier were written for sacks and horses and smugglers' coin, not for the cold, so Josef wrote nothing down. He closed the book, gave it back to her, and lifted the barrier with his own hand.
She walked down into the lower valley that evening with the flake tucked in her boot, and by morning the road was bare. Josef kept the pencil stub she had forgotten to declare. On the first frost of each year he scratched a six-armed star into the inside of the gate, where anyone coming through could see it.
