Yellow roses on both ankles

Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo

The photo shows two matching tattoos of yellow roses with dark green leaves, one on each ankle, seen from above against a dark carpet. The roses have bold black outlines and shaded yellow petals with darker tonal areas, in a traditional style. The beige suede heels frame the tattoos, which are centred in the shot.

Mind the loose board by the door, and sit where the peat smoke can't get at your eyes. You'll have heard of the yellow roses of Inchcorran, or you haven't, and that's no matter, for they were never grown in any garden you could walk into.

Old Mairi Gillies kept the only plot on the north side of the island where anything would flower. She had a wall of flat stones her father built, and every spring she pushed a barrow up from the shore full of kelp for the soil. Her roses were the colour of an egg yolk, gold at the heart and darker at the edges where the petals curled like old paper. They were stubborn, the way things are when they've been carried over the sea in a bag of wet sand.

Her son sailed for the mainland the winter the boats stopped coming in. He wrote once, to say the lights there were too many to count and he could no longer find the north star. So she cut a rose on the first warm morning, sealed its stem in wax, and gave it to the ferryman's boy to carry across. Every week after, another went. No reply ever came back, but the wall grew brighter each summer, until the neighbours crossed themselves when they passed it.

When the ferryman's boy was an old man himself, he walked up one February and found the wall bare, the earth black with frost. On the flat step lay a single yellow rose, still cold, with no note tied to it. He looked out at the water, and there was nothing on it but the grey. Some things come home without being asked, and that's the whole of it, so pour yourself a dram and mind the fire.
