In the wet market at Coldharbour, where the awnings sagged under standing water, a flower seller named Hannah Pell kept one bucket apart from the others. It held roses, dark red and heavy-headed, and nobody bought from it, because each bloom had a white line running through its centre like a stitch pulled tight.

A carter asked her once why she did not sell them. She said the roses were not hers to sell. Her grandmother had grown them on a slope above the river and had told her that each flower held a small cross where the petals met, and that a cross would not wash out in rain. The carter laughed, paid for one anyway, and went off with it pinned to his coat.

The rain came for three days that October. The river rose over the lower stalls, the fish man lost his barrow to it, and the bread woman's ovens went cold. On the third morning the carter came back, soaked to the knees, and found Hannah sitting on an upturned crate with the bucket between her boots. Every rose in it was still closed and dry.

He asked her what she wanted for them. She said a small black cross, cut from a scrap of slate, to lay on the step where the water came up. He did not ask why. By dusk the river had sunk back between its banks, and the slate was still there, dry on top, the rain running off it in clean lines.
