Red rose with ink splashes on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A red rose with shaded petals sits at the centre of the design, with sketchy black linework tracing the outline and curling stems. Green shading appears along the stems and leaves, while loose black ink splashes and red wash strokes spread across the upper back. The composition is organic and asymmetrical, and the photograph is taken straight on at close range.

Mr Ansell wanted the rose on the side of the removal van by Friday, and he wanted it red enough to be seen from the top of the hill. I had never painted a rose bigger than a teacup. Still, I mixed the carmine with a drop of gum arabic the way my mother had taught me at the kitchen table, and I went at the tin panel with a brush worn down to four hairs.

The trouble with watercolour on metal is that it does not forgive you. Every wash dries with a bloom at its edge, a tidemark that looks like a mistake until you decide it was intended. So I stopped trying to be neat. I let the red run where it wanted, flicked a dark stroke of ink across the top like a crow crossing a window, and dropped black splashes wherever my wrist shook. The stems I did in green, dragged downward, and where they crossed the splashes they went muddy and strange, which pleased me more than anything had in months.
Ansell came out at dusk with his pipe. He looked at the panel for a long time without speaking, and I waited for him to say it was too wild. Instead he said his wife had grown roses in the yard behind the chapel, and they had never once looked like that, all bleeding at the edges, and that was exactly why he wanted them.
I kept the brush. I still have it, the four hairs gone to nothing, and I think of that panel every time a customer asks me for something tidy.
