Blue rose on the shoulder
Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A large rose with a blue centre and petals is drawn in black linework, with loose blue wash and ink splatters spreading out around the bloom. The colour is mostly blue with touches of black and a few light highlights, and the tattoo fills the upper part of the frame over the shoulder.

Rain had been coming sideways down Gallow Market since six, and Nell Farrier had given up on the awnings. She stood at the end of her trestle with a bucket of white roses standing in water that had gone the colour of a bruise. Every Saturday for eleven years her father had sold blue roses here, and every Saturday people asked how he did it, and he told them the flowers drank the dye up through their stems, the way paper drinks in a wash.

Her father had died in March. The recipe was in his coat, on a card soaked to pulp in the left pocket, the ink names smudged past reading. She had spent three weeks guessing at proportions, pouring indigo and a splash of something from the brown bottle he kept in the drawer marked nails, and the roses came up pale or came up grey. Today's batch had opened blue at the heart and bled outward at the petal edges, the way a wash spreads on wet paper before anyone is allowed to lift the brush.
A man in a yellow cagoule stopped, lifted a rose, and turned it under the stall light. "Your dad's," he said. "Always knew what he was doing with a splash." She did not correct him. She wrapped the stem in newspaper and took his coins, which were wet and warm from somebody's pocket.
When the stall closed she tipped the leftover water into the gutter. Blue spread across the wet cobbles in a long curved stain, running down to the drain and stopping at the grate as if it had been asked to wait. She stood in the rain and watched it go, then kept the last rose inside her coat, its petals dark and bleeding faintly onto her palm.
