Red rose with thorned stem on a shoulder blade
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A single red rose bloom sits at the top of a long, thorned green stem, with two green leaves branching off the lower half. The petals are shaded in deep reds and pinks with darker outlines, and the stem and leaves use bold black linework. The tattoo is centred on the upper back, photographed from behind with a plain light background.

Nell knelt behind the waltzers with a jam jar of rainwater and the single red rose she had won at the ring toss and still had not thrown away. The bloom had dropped two petals since the afternoon. Her brother Tom was shouting for the generator key from the far side of the big top, and the wind off the ground-sheets smelled of diesel and candyfloss.

She had won it from Mr Varley, who ran the rose stall and never gave anything away. He had watched her throw three rings at the bottles with the flat patience of a man who had seen every trick going. On the fourth throw the ring caught the neck of a bottle and dropped over the stem of the rose in the display bucket, and he laughed so hard he had to sit on a crate of unsold lemonade. "Take it, then," he said. "Thorns and all. It's cheaper than the lesson."
She stood the stem in the jar and tucked it under the caravan step, where the sun would reach it by six. By morning the bloom had opened, darker at the edges where the water had bruised it, and a thorn had snagged the lace of her boot. She pressed the rose flat between the pages of the ledger she kept for the fair, between the takings and the names of the lads who owed her for lost tokens.
The fair packed up at noon. Nell wrapped the jar in a towel and set it on the passenger seat of the lorry, and when the engine coughed into life she did not look back at the field. She looked at the rose, which had leaned toward the window as if it meant to come along.
