Realistic rose on a shoulder blade

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large open rose with layered petals sits over the shoulder blade, with three dark leaves extending to the right and lower left. The rose uses soft grey shading and fine tonal gradients to show depth, with deep black accents in the leaves and the centre of the bloom. The photograph is taken from behind and shows the back of the head, a thin necklace and a brick wall in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rose on Carrick Wall had never been red, and the lamplighters of Vell said that was the first thing a stranger should learn about it. It grew out of the mortar where the brick met the iron railing, a great open bloom the colour of ash, with leaves so dark they looked wet even in the dry weeks. Ada Penhallow lit the forty lamps of the Wall each evening with a long brass pole, and each evening she stopped beneath the rose and counted its petals, because her mother had told her the number changed when someone in the city was about to leave it.

One October a cab driver named Silas Moor came up the Wall at midnight, drunk on a wager, and laughed at the story. He wanted a bloom for the girl he meant to marry in the spring. Ada warned him that the rose gave only what it was owed. He snapped the stem anyway, low on the wall, and tucked it inside his coat. By the next lamp-lighting the petals had gone grey as river stones and the leaves had crept down his sleeve in black veins, and his horse would not carry him past the corner.

Ada did not go to him. She went to the rose instead and sat on the cold kerb until the sky over the chimney pots began to pale, singing the old lamp-lighters' hymn under her breath until the petals stirred. She cut a fresh bud with her own knife and laid it on the stone beside the broken stem. Nobody on Carrick Wall ever learned what she traded for it.

By morning Silas was walking home to the girl with his hands in his pockets and nothing in his coat. The stem lay where he had dropped it, and the rose above it had one more petal than before, pale as a lamp that has just been lit, and it went on counting the nights for anyone who cared to stop and listen.
