Red triangle spiral on the chest

Geometric · Chest · Colour · Photo

The design is a triangle built from many thin red lines that converge towards a point near the centre, creating a spiral or tunnel-like perspective effect. The lines appear slightly raised and glossy, which suggests the tattoo is fresh, and they vary a little in weight and density across the piece. The photograph is taken at an angle against plain skin, with the design filling most of the frame.

The kingdom of Harrowmere kept a rule that every debt was carried to the Well of Ash on the third day of thaw. Nobody had written the rule down, but the old women of Cold Cross Lane repeated it while they cut bread, and so it was true.

Wenna Calloway was a weaver's girl with a good eye and a poor memory for prices. She owed the miller four measures of salt, and her brother owed the ferryman a boat he had sunk. On the morning of the thaw she took a ball of red wool, a straight-edged stick and a bowl of chalk, and drew a triangle on the flagstones of the square. Then she ran lines from each corner toward a single point, as her grandmother had shown her, so that the lines crowded together and seemed to fall away into depth, like a stair going down under the ground.

The miller came to look. He stood at the open side of the triangle and said the lines were wrong, that they should meet at a point and not crowd. Wenna said that was the trick of it. Whoever walked the path had to keep to the thinnest line, the one nearest the middle, or the lines would turn them round in circles. The miller laughed and stepped onto the outer line to prove her wrong. He walked inward, slower and slower, until the wool hummed under his boots and he was at the centre, where the cold lay and the debts were kept.

Wenna rolled the wool tight and went home. Her brother asked what the miller had said. She told him the miller had paid everything, and had gone to look for the well. Nobody in Harrowmere checked the rule about salt again, and the chalk lines were redrawn each thaw, a little thicker every year.
