Red tulip and pink rose forearm tattoo
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of flowers including a red tulip, a pink rose, and small blue blossoms, with green leaves, stems and yellow berry sprigs curving across the forearm. The linework is soft and the petals are filled with smooth, painterly shading and gentle colour gradients. The forearm is shown from the elbow to the wrist, with a standing figure in leopard print flats and a clenched hand in the frame, and the background is a plain light floor.

The last train from Carlisle had already gone when Nell Hardacre began sorting the buckets at the flower kiosk on platform four. Sixteen pence a stem in the morning, twenty by evening, chalked on a board the wind kept trying to take. She pulled the red tulips first, because they bruised, and laid them along the zinc counter like a row of small lanterns.

A man in a wet raincoat came up the ramp at ten to nine and asked for something for his mother. He did not know which flower she liked. Nell asked him what colour her kitchen was. He said yellow, then frowned and said it had been yellow in 1974. She built a bunch from a pink rose, two sprigs of blue blossom, a tangle of green leaves and a few stems of yellow berries, and wrapped it in brown paper folded the way her gran had shown her, with string knotted twice.
When the platform lights buzzed on and the last rush had thinned, one tulip was left, bent at the neck where someone had knocked the bucket. Nell could have binned it. Instead she tucked it into the inside pocket of her cardigan, where it stayed warm against her ribs, and she watched the signal change from red to green over the empty rails.
Next morning she stood it in a jam jar beside the chalk board. The petals opened a little more each hour, and by noon the red cup was fully open and catching the light from the concourse. Nobody bought it, so it stayed.
