Nobody in Greaves Harbour ever asked Mr Tully why he painted a duck in a sailor's cap, and he never offered. He ran the back room of the chandlers on Quay Street with a jar of rust-red enamel, a box of cream felt and a tin of fish-scale blue, and for eleven shillings he would stitch a badge onto any sailor's jacket that came through the door. The ones he liked best had a little nonsense in them.

The Hallows boys came in the spring of fifty-six with a sack of their dad's old flying jackets and a drawing of a panther on the back of a seed packet. The panther had to be bigger, they said, and it had to have lightning. Tully spent three evenings getting the claws right. The eldest, Ray, wanted the snarl to look like it was about to take somebody's head off, and Tully told him a snarl only frightened people who were already looking for trouble.
When the Hallows boys shipped out, the panther went with them, stitched to a canvas kitbag. Tully never saw it again, but in October a postcard came from Malta with a penguin on the front, wearing a sailor's cap and holding a torpedo like a rolled-up newspaper. On the back, in pencil: Mr T, the penguin is mine now. Keep the duck. Ray says the duck is rubbish.
Tully kept the duck on the shelf above the till, where the light off the harbour came through the window and turned its orange beak the colour of a sunset. He left it there a long time. When the baker's girl asked him what it meant, he told her it meant someone was being marched home and someone else was keeping time.
