Riddikulus script on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with a single finger showing black handwritten script that reads Riddikulus. The lettering is a loose, looping hand with smooth, even strokes that follow the curve of the finger. A brass-toned metal ring with a faceted, star-like shape sits near the base of the finger, and the plain white background keeps the focus on the skin and the writing.

The thing in Mr Aske's wardrobe had been a wolf for three nights running, and by the fourth it had sprouted a bonnet and a pair of his late wife's slippers, which Dorothy Penhale said was a sign it was losing its nerve. She sent me up the lane at dusk with a sprig of rowan, a pen, and a brass star she'd taken off a stall at the autumn fair, and told me the word had to be written on the skin where I'd see it every time I reached for a door.

The landing door was ajar, and the wolf sat on the top stair scratching at its bonnet. Mr Aske stood in the hall in his dressing gown, holding a poker like a man who had given up on it. "Say it like it's the silliest word you ever heard," Dorothy had told me. So I stood in the doorway with the pen between my teeth, wrote the word across my middle finger in looping letters that wobbled over the knuckle, and read it out loud. "Riddikulus!" It came out so pompous that I nearly swallowed my tongue, and the wolf sneezed. The bonnet slid down over one eye.
It sat down and began, very politely, to weep into the slippers. Mr Aske laughed, the first proper laugh I'd heard from him since the funeral, and the wolf dwindled into a grey dust that smelled of wet pennies and bracken. I walked home through the wood with the star ring cold against the ink, and by the time I reached the green the word had started to fade at its edges, the way words do when you have said them often enough to believe them.
