Rodzina script lettering on the side
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a script tattoo spelling the word Rodzina, with a small outlined heart above the letters. The linework is smooth and even, with a looping tail extending from the capital R. The image is cropped tightly on the skin, with soft natural lighting and the text running diagonally across the frame.

Sit nearer the stove, you lot, and mind the kettle, because this is the one about the word that wouldn't come off the boat. My grandfather bought the narrowboat Lark from a man in Stourport who had painted her name over three times. Under the paint, he said, the old name was still there if you held the lamp at the right angle, and that was the first lesson: nothing you write on wood stays put.

He had a daughter, my mother, who had a habit of writing things down. Shopping lists on the cabin door. Tide times on the back of his hand when he was too stubborn to find his glasses. One winter at Tixall Wide, with the ice thick enough to walk on and the cargo gone to Birmingham, she took a blunt pencil and wrote a word along the cabin roof in tall looping capitals she'd copied from her mother's hymn book. RODZINA. Family. Above it she drew a small heart, because she was sentimental and never denied it, and she gave the R a long curling tail so it would look like it was still moving. Nobody on the cut could spell it, she said, so it would be safe there.
The rain came in March and took the pencil marks clean away. Nobody thought more of it until the spring, when my grandfather went up with a tin of varnish and found the word again, rubbed into the grain, paler than before and somehow sharper at the edges. He said the boat had kept it. He said a family word wants a bit of stubbornness to hold on to. Then he varnished right over it anyway, and we all knew exactly where it was, and that's the whole point of the story, isn't it? So pass the biscuits.
