Dearest R, the ferryman says the river will freeze hard enough to walk by Candlemas, so I have had the inkmaker in Dunmere mix the brown oak-gall he uses for the royal seals, and I am writing this with a goose quill that has never once been trusted with anything important. You will laugh. The palace scribes have been ordered to stop copying the old songs, and the queen has decreed that every letter sent beyond the Vell must carry a small mark of its sender, so I have drawn my initial with a little heart beside it, the way you did in the margins of our schoolbooks.

The kingdom is quieter without you. Cook Hobb still burns the bread on Tuesdays and the swans have taken over the north steps. Yesterday I found your old copy of the Tidewater Almanac under the hearth, the one with the coffee ring shaped like a crown, and inside the back cover you had written my name with a loop on the F so large it reached the edge of the page. I have kept the book open to that page ever since, weighted with the salt cellar so the draught cannot turn it.

Write back soon, and tell me the salt cities have not taught you to forget your own hand. If the ice holds I will walk out to meet the post boat halfway, and we can trade letters across the water like two stubborn clerks who never learned when to stop bargaining.
