Rope band tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with a tattoo of a braided rope band wrapped around one finger. The rope pattern is shaded in black and grey with soft highlights, and a faint reddish tone shows in the centre of the band. A silver coin lies on the back of the hand to the left, and the lighting is warm and slightly uneven.

Sit down, sit down, the bridge will keep its own time. You want to know about the rope? Everyone asks about the rope. My grandmother's cousin twisted cord for the ferry at Ardley Crossing, where the river runs brown and fast enough to take a goat off its feet. Three strands, then four, laid up tight so the braid holds when the water pulls. She said a good rope looks like it is holding itself together, and so it does.

The border men came one February with a sack of silver and a list of names. They wanted the crossing rope cut so no one could slip over without paying the toll. Cousin Orla took the coin they offered her, a stiff old piece with a woman's head stamped on it, and she spent the whole night unpicking the lay of the rope at the water's edge. By morning the strands looked whole to a stranger, but three turns of the braid had been reversed, and a child could feel the slack under her hand.

Nobody crossed that day, nor the next. The men argued, then ran short of patience, then short of rope. They did not know the cord had been stitched on the wrong side. When the ice came down the river that week, it snapped the ferry line clean and the toll house went with it.

Orla kept the coin. She said it weighed less than the ring of cord she wore on her finger, dark and knotted through with red thread, and that a knot you tie for yourself never comes undone when the world does. That is all there is to it. Now pass the bottle along, and mind the step.
