Hand · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with the fingers curled, showing a band tattoo wrapped around one finger. The band is filled with dark black ink and contains light blue swirling ornamental motifs with small accents. The shading is solid and the background is out of focus, with the tattoo sitting centrally in the frame.

The bellows have gone quiet, so you hold the rod in the coals with the tongs and wait for the colour to climb. Straw, then gold, then the bruised blue that Mr Pell says means the steel will hold its nerve. Out on Church Lane a bicycle bell rings twice and stops. It is a Thursday in Ashby Fenning, and nothing in the town moves faster than the quench hissing in the trough.

Mrs Aske comes in just after four with a sixpence she has been holding in her glove all afternoon. She has drawn the thing on the back of a seed catalogue: a band as wide as a thumbnail, with two scrolls curling toward each other like the ironwork on the vicarage gate. She wants it blued, not silvered, because silver, she says, looks like it is trying too hard. You tell her blue takes a year to settle, and she laughs and says she has been waiting longer than that for most things.

You spend the evening with a cold chisel and a fine file, cutting the scrolls into the band by lamplight while the rest of the street goes dark. The metal takes the lamp and gives it back in small blue points. Each curl has to be sunk deep enough to catch the eye across a room and shallow enough that a hand can wear it without snagging. By the time the church clock strikes ten you have stopped thinking of it as a ring at all. It is only a line that has agreed to turn back on itself.

She comes for it the next morning, before the bus to Stamford. She slides it onto her finger, turns her hand to the window, and the blue catches the light the way you hoped it would. She does not thank you. She tucks the catalogue back into her coat and says she will write when she gets there, and you find that you believe her, which is the only guarantee a forge has ever really needed.
