The florist has dropped the bouquet twice now, and I have had to fish it out from under the trestle table, which is how I come to be writing this on the back of a seating plan. Dad keeps asking whether the cake has arrived. It has. It is a lopsided thing with a fondant hedgehog on top, and I am choosing to find that funny rather than tragic.

You will remember Gran's fence at the bottom of the allotment, the one she propped up with old fence posts from the council tip. Every summer she grew those purple anemones along it, the ones with the black eye in the middle that she swore were the only flowers that never sulked. This morning Mum found a bunch of them still wrapped in wet newspaper in the back of Gran's car, which nobody has driven since the funeral.

Gran used to tell us about the big grey creature in the picture book she bought you for your fourth birthday. It had a belly like a warm loaf and a smaller pale one that rode on its head, and it held flowers the way you would hold a sleeping cat, with both arms and no fuss. I thought she was being soppy. Now I am trying to tie the stems with ribbon the way it would have done, and failing, and it does not matter, because the blooms are still standing up straight.

Come and find me before the speeches. Bring your handkerchief, and keep Dad away from the cake knife.
