Rose and script tattoos on legs in a bath
Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare legs rest in bathwater, showing a shaded black and grey rose with layered petals and leaves on the left leg. The right leg carries a smaller script lettering piece with scrolled flourishes, and partly visible scrollwork lettering appears lower on both legs. The soft, warm lighting and foamy water fill the background.

Ivy Marr had been gilding shop fascias in Stroud for thirty-one years, and she could tell a good flourish from a lazy one by the sound a brush made. The one drifting through the open workshop door was lazy. Her nephew Tomasz was lettering a pub sign for the Cross Keys with his tongue poking out, and every swash ended in a small hiccup.

"Loosen the wrist," she said, without looking up from the board on her easel. It was a rose for a bridal shop on Gloucester Road, shaded in black and grey, the petals folded over one another like unopened letters, the leaves dark and heavy with rain. The bride had wanted it on the card and nowhere else. Ivy had argued for a bigger version and lost, which happened less often than she liked to admit.
On Friday the bride's mother came in to collect the board, carrying a tin of lemon curd and a photograph on her phone. Her daughter had a rose on one leg and a script name on the other, and she wanted the lettering on the card to match. Ivy studied the picture for a long time, then pulled out her old ledger of hand-cut stencils and found a looped capital that had been sitting there since 1994, waiting for someone to ask for it.
When the mother left, Tomasz asked why Ivy had kept a stencil nobody had wanted for three decades. She wiped her brush on a rag and said that some letters only needed the right customer to turn up, and that she had always known this one would be needed for a wedding.
