Round glasses with eyes on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A pair of round, gold-rimmed glasses sits across the forearm, with a realistic eye drawn inside each lens. The linework is bold and the eyes are shaded in grey and pale blue. Teal and blue washes with loose vertical brush streaks fill the background behind the frames, giving a painted, unfinished feel.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The spectacles came back from Birmingham in a brown paper parcel, the string knotted the way Mr Pargeter always tied it, and you were the one sent to carry them through the rain to the post room, because his knees would not stand another wet Thursday. Inside were the round gold frames the painter, Mr Ashdown, had ordered in March and never once collected.

He had come into the shop with paint on his cuffs and asked for lenses that would make the hills above the Hallam road look the way they did at six in the morning, washed blue with the rain still in them. Mr Pargeter had laughed and said glass could not do that, but Ashdown insisted, and sketched on the back of a bill: two eyes sitting in the rims, looking out.

You turned the frames over under the lamp. Someone at the works had painted the lenses by hand, teal and grey, the colour dragged down the glass in long brushed streaks, and in the centre of each one sat an eye so lifelike that you stopped with the cloth in your hand. You set the spectacles on the counter, and the eyes stared back at you through the shop window, which was streaked the same way by the Thursday weather.

Mr Pargeter came out wiping his hands. 'Ashdown's been dead since Michaelmas,' he said. 'His sister keeps asking after them.' You wrapped the frames again, tied the string the way he liked, and carried them up the hill, where the fields lay washed out exactly as Ashdown had promised, and nothing in the glass looked back at you.
