The wind off the moor had teeth that winter, and Nell Harrow kept her back to it while she stacked the peat by the gate. Her brother had sold the grey mare to the Tallis farm in October, for less than she was worth, and every morning since Nell had walked the empty paddock twice before breakfast, as if the mare might have been mislaid under the hawthorn.

On the first night of the thaw, a horse came down the lane with no rider and no halter, its mane streaming back as though it ran through a gale that only it could feel. It stopped at the gate and lowered its head, and Nell saw the mare's white blaze, though the animal was black as a rook's wing. It did not look at her. It looked past her at the house, at the lit kitchen window where her brother sat counting the Tallis money twice over.

Nell opened the gate. The horse walked through without touching the latch, and when it passed the peat stack she heard the long breath it let out, the sound a bell makes after it stops ringing. She followed it up the lane to the crossroads, where her brother had once made a wish over a dropped shilling, and there the horse turned its neck in one unbroken curve and waited.

In the morning the Tallis man came hammering at the door, shouting that his mare had gone from the stable with the bolts still shot. Nell only nodded and poured him tea. In the paddock, the grass under the hawthorn had been trampled into the shape of a long running stride, and it was going to rain by noon.
