Running shoe with script on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small running trainer is tattooed on the outer upper arm, with a short line of script lettering beneath it. The linework is fine and the design is filled in solid black in parts, with simple shading on the sole. The background is a blurred outdoor scene of green trees, and the ink is the only colour in the image.

Dear Ruth,

Mr Pascoe has taken the top floor front again, the one with the sea view and the wobbling washstand, and he has been out before six every morning this week. I hear him on the stairs in those white canvas shoes with the blue heel, thump, thump, like someone knocking to be let in. Mrs Gale says he's training for the Whitsun race along the front, eleven miles there and back, though he told me it was nine and a half and I have stopped correcting him.
Yesterday I found the left shoe on the landing outside the bathroom, laces trailing like something dropped by a bird. I carried it down to the hall to put by the boot rack, and while I was turning it over I saw the sole was worn clean through at the ball of the foot, a pale star where the rubber had gone. He'd written on the tongue in biro, a few words I couldn't read without my spectacles, so I put it back on the mat with the laces tucked in.
This morning he came down before I was up, and I heard the front door click and then nothing, and I thought, well, that's him gone for good. But at half past eight he was on the bench by the shelter, sitting with his hands on his knees, and when he saw me at the window he lifted one of those shoes off the path and waved it at me like a flag. He is slower than he was, he says, but he is not stopping.
Write soon. Tell Ivy the kettle's still on the blink.
Love, Maud
