Sailor and girl in a rope heart on a leg

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon figures, a girl with a red bow in her hair and a boy wearing a sailor cap, embracing inside a heart outlined with a twisted rope border. A red flower sits at the base of the heart. Bold black outlines, solid red, blue and skin-toned fills, and soft shading give it a classic flash look, shown on a limb against a plain background.

Dear Nell,

We are three days from Gibraltar and the bosun has finally let us have the lamp oil back, so you may take this as the longest letter I have managed since Tilbury. Your ribbon is still folded under the band of my cap, where the salt cannot get at it. Tell your mother I have not lost it, whatever Dobbs says in the mess about the state of my pockets.

Did the poppies come up along the back wall as you planted them? I dreamt of them last night, a red smear on the grey harbour wall at Plymouth, and woke with the taste of tar in my mouth. I hope Mr Abbott's cat has kept off the bed by the scullery door. You will be cross with me for saying so, but I would rather hear about that cat than about the weather, which here is nothing but a flat blue ache.

The cook says a sailor keeps his heart in his cap, which I thought was the sort of thing men say to sound clever. Then I caught myself with my hand on the brim again, the fourth time before breakfast, and I stopped laughing. So I have taken the spare bootlace from the drawer and tied it round the cap band, one knot for every port we have not yet reached.

Write back to Gibraltar, care of the post office. If the flowers are out, pick one and press it flat in the back of this letter, and I will know you are still standing in that garden with one hand on the gate, waiting for me to come round the corner.

Yours, with the salt still in my hair, Tom
