The brooch had been in the back drawer of Dunn's Fancy Dress since the autumn the carnival was rained off, wrapped in a tea towel that smelled of mothballs and hairspray. Maggie found it while hunting for a size twelve wig, and held it up to the strip light the way you'd test a coin.

Tomasz from the chip shop next door had come in for a costume for his sister's eighth birthday, and he watched Maggie turn the gold moon over in her palm. "Does it do anything?" he asked. "Only if you're brave enough to wink at it," she said, "and only after the bins have gone out."

His sister Ola didn't need asking twice. She clipped the brooch to a red ribbon bow in her hair, stood on the wet step, and winked at the streetlamp across the road. The lamp buzzed, went out, and came back on a shade pinker than before, as if someone had tied a bow round its neck.

Next morning the ribbon was still there, a crimson loop knotted round the lamp post, and the chip shop's ledger balanced to the penny for the first time in years. Maggie put the tea towel back in the drawer and kept the brooch in her coat pocket.
