The ribbon had come off the spool again by the time Nell reached the stile, a length of yellow satin trailing across the bracken as if someone ahead were walking with it held loose in one hand. She had been sent for thread, not ribbon. Her mother's shop sold both, and the Hallam boys had a habit of unrolling stock to see how far it reached. She followed it anyway, hitching her basket higher on her arm.

The ribbon ran between the oaks at the forest edge and tied itself, every twenty yards or so, around a standing stone with a crescent cut into its top. Nell knew the stones from the old boundary walk. Her grandmother said the crescents were so the moon could see its own shape when it lost its way down among the trees. Nell had never believed a word of it, but the stones were wet with fresh rain and the ribbon was dry.
At the last stone a girl sat on the root of a beech, swinging her heels. Her hair was pinned up in two round buns, gold as butter, each bound with ribbon that matched the length on the ground. She wore a blue sailor collar over a red-bowed bodice, and at her throat hung a heart brooch the colour of cherries. "You're late," she said, not unkindly. "I've been waiting since the lamps were lit in the village."
Nell held out the spool. The girl laughed, took it, and wound the ribbon back on in three fast turns before pressing it into Nell's palm. "Tell your mother the moon has outgrown its hem." When Nell looked up, the beech was bare and the stone was only a stone, but her palm was warm, and a neat yellow stitch ran along the bottom of her basket where the thread had been caught.
