Tarot card with three daggers and a bleeding heart
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A tarot card outline numbered III sits in the centre of the design, with three daggers piercing a solid red heart and three drops of blood falling below it. The bold black outlines are paired with hatched lines on the card border and light grey shading on the blades. Red is the only colour, filling the heart and blood drops against the grey and black linework.

The card-seller came up the valley road the week after the Hollin pit flooded, with a tin trunk and a dog that would not walk past the chapel. Nobody bought from her at first. Women did not want their husbands' futures read by a stranger, and men did not want them read at all. But Ada Pryce, whose man was still under the water at the Number Two shaft, paid a penny for a card, and the woman turned it over on the kitchen table with one finger.

It was the third card in the deck, drawn in ink with hatched borders, and three blades went through a red heart on it. Ada did not ask what it meant. The card-seller said it meant grief that had a shape, and that the shape would have three edges, and each edge would be a thing you must carry up out of the dark yourself.
Ada carried them. She carried the first on the morning the rescue men stopped digging, when she made herself walk to the pit head and say his name to the foreman. She carried the second at the inquest, where the owners' man said the ventilation had been sound. The third she kept until the spring, when the wet rings on the windowsill had dried, and she took the card down from the mantel and folded it into the lining of her coat.
The card-seller had gone before the funeral. Her trunk was no longer on the road, and the dog had gone with it. In the thaw, a boy found a tin box at the edge of the drift with three old blades rusted together, and a scrap of paper inside that said only: the third is yours to put down.
