Small star constellation on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests palm down on a floral bedsheet, with a small constellation tattoo on the inner wrist. Tiny black dots mark the stars, joined by thin fine lines in a loose arrangement. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the hand sits centred in the frame with black nail polish on the fingers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Hal, the roof over the north chamber gave way on Tuesday, so I have moved my table under the arch where the old lord kept his dovecote. You will laugh, but the sky is the only ceiling I trust now. Mrs Pargeter brings bread up the hill on Thursdays and insists the place is haunted, which I have decided to take as a compliment to the instruments.

I have been copying the stars from your father's almanac onto the plaster with a stick of charcoal, joining the points with a thread dipped in soot so the lines hold through the damp. Seven points for the hunter's belt, three for his shoulder, and one that wobbles like a loose tooth. Every night I check them against the sky, and every night one more has drifted out of its place by the width of a fingernail. Your father always said that was the earth turning and not the stars wandering off, but I have started to doubt him.

Last night the cloud broke around midnight and I found a small cluster I could not name, six pinpricks in a loose shape, almost like a lantern hung low over a gate. I pressed the points into the margin of the almanac with the tip of a needle and drew fine lines between them, the way you once showed me to mark a route across a moor. The ink went dark and stayed dark, which is more than I can say for most things in this county.

So if you come up in spring, look for the lantern above the ruined gate, then follow the thread down to the belt. The wall is nearly full and the stars do not wait for anyone, so bring the good ink. Mrs Pargeter says she will leave the bread at the bottom of the path, and I will leave a light in the arch.
