Scattered star constellation on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Several small eight-pointed stars and tiny solid dots are spread across the skin in a loose, irregular pattern, with one star set upright and the others at varied angles. The linework is thin and crisp, with the stars shaded using fine hatched strokes and the dots filled solid. The tattoos are black ink only, set against a close crop of pale skin with a door and frame visible at the right edge.

The chart had been drawn by hand in 1911, and Ada Penhallow had spent three winters trying to match its pencilled dots to the sky above Porthcurno. Her father had marked each fixed point with a little eight-pointed star, the way the old instrument makers did, and the dots he left for the stars too faint to name. She kept the chart flat under a jar of tide-glass on the kitchen table, where the morning light came through the window and laid it bare.

On the first clear night of March she carried the chart up the cliff path with a torch taped to her wrist. The wind came off the sea in short hard pushes. At the top she found the upright star by its long vertical ray, the one her father had set like a lighthouse on the page, and then the others fell into place one by one, the way a sentence does once you know its first word. The dots were harder. Two of them had no stars anywhere near, only blackness and the faint smear of the Milky Way.
She stood there until her fingers went numb, then pressed the chart against the damp stone wall of the coastguard hut and traced the dots with the end of her pencil. Below her the lamp at the harbour blinked twice. It was not a constellation, she thought, so much as a list of places where someone had once stopped to look. She folded the chart along its worn crease and went home, leaving the dots exactly where they were.
