Aries symbol on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with white French tip nails, turned to show the inner wrist. A small, solid black Aries zodiac symbol sits on the wrist, drawn with smooth, even lines. The background is a wooden floor and pale walls, and the tattoo is the clear focus of the frame.

The ram came down off Hallow Fell the morning the mist refused to lift, and he came down alone, which was the first thing Nan Kettlewell noticed. Every other ewe on the allotment had gone up after the lambs in the grey, and they were bawling from the top wall like kettles left on. Tallow was the oldest tup in the valley, his horns coiled twice over his ears like the tight end of a fern, and he stood at the gate and looked at her as if she owed him money.

She had a tin of barley and a crook she could no longer swing, so she followed him. He took the old packhorse track above the beck, stopping every few yards to turn his head back, and where the path forked by the lime kiln he stopped so long she thought he had died on his feet. Then he lowered his head and butted the cairn three times. Out of the white came a thin bleating, then four more, then the whole scattered flock, hooves skidding on the scree.
She counted them through the gate with her thumb on each one, and when she reached the last lamb, a black-faced runt the size of a loaf, Tallow was already turning back for the fell. "Not on your life," she told him, but he went anyway, and she heard the knock of his hooves on stone for a long while after, getting quieter until there was only the beck.
In spring she found a curl pressed into the mud above the lime kiln, one unbroken line where a hoof had turned back on itself. She left the gate open every night after that.
