Scorpio zodiac symbol on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black Scorpio zodiac symbol, drawn with a thin, even line, sits on the middle segment of a finger. The hand is held up against a plain pale wall, with the tattoo centred on the finger and in sharp focus. The palette is solely black ink on skin, with the dark and gold nail polish as the only other colour.

Hold still, and let me tell it properly, because the children always want the road to end kindly in this one. Gilgamesh came over the mountains to the place where the sun goes down each night, and at the gate stood the scorpion-folk, half man and half beast, their tails lifted above them like a wall of hooked spears. They had watched the hero climb the pass for many days, and they were not impressed by his lion skin.

He shouted that he had walked from the far side of the world with his sandals worn through to the bone. The eldest scorpion did not lower his tail. He asked only one thing: had the hero ever carried something that was not his own, and set it down where he found it? Gilgamesh had no answer ready, so he stood in the dust of the road with his mouth open and felt, for the first time in his long life, very small.
Then the scorpion-wife, Ishara, came forward with a thin reed dipped in soot. She did not ask his permission. She took his hand, found the middle joint of his smallest finger, and drew a little curl with a barb at the end, steady as a stone dropped in still water. 'Now you are counted among us,' she said, 'and the gate will let you hear what the sun says when it goes under the mountain.'
Every night after that, when the hero lay in his tent with the wind pulling at the cloth, he pressed that finger against his thumb and listened. The sun went down without him, as it always had, and he slept. That is why the mark sits where it does, on the middle of the finger, where a person reaches first for the things they are not yet sure they deserve.
