Screaming cartoon rabbit tattoo on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A large cartoon rabbit with long ears and a wide open mouth showing teeth sits on a rock-like base, with a smaller brown creature with a toothy grin beside it. The figures are shaded with soft tonal modelling in tan, pink and red, set against a dark grey and purple cloudy background. The two photographs show the same tattoo from slightly different angles, with the design filling the length of the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Mercy Venn kept the water barrel at the last well before the Sallow Pass, and every August the hare came down off the rock to shout at her. Nobody else had ever seen it do more than sit. But it would come when the heat lifted off the road, stand on its flat stone with its ears laid back, and open its mouth wide enough to show the two big teeth and the red throat behind them. The sound rolled over the dunes like a train on a trestle. Drovers swore it was the rock talking.

Her grandson Tobias brought the little brown thing up from the wadi one spring, a creature with a grin full of splinters that followed him about like a dog. It hid in his coat pocket and bit anyone who reached for the barrel. The hare did not come down for it. It only watched from above, mouth shut for once, as the boy and the grinning creature walked the road to the rail town with the mail sack.

Mercy said the hare was screaming at the road itself, at every lorry and cart that rattled past without stopping. Nobody believed her until a dust storm closed the pass for three days, and the only sound getting through the grit was that hollow howl from the rock, steady as a bell. The drovers came in one at a time, roped together, following the noise.

When the storm cleared, Tobias found the creature sitting on the flat stone where the hare had been, grinning up at the empty sky. The rock was bare. Mercy filled the barrel and said nothing about it, which was how she said most things.
