Script Dad with small fish on wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single word, Dad, written in flowing black script on the inside of a pale wrist. A small fish outline sits above the capital D, and the linework is fine and even. The tattoo is shown in sharp focus against plain skin, with a bedroom background softly out of focus.

Kenny Marsh kept his takings in a tobacco tin under the slab at the back of the Grimsby market stall, and on the lid, in his own careful capitals, he wrote the day's tally. The little fish his daughter Nell had sketched on the corner of the invoice pad was meant as a joke, but the lads on the quay had taken to calling it the boss, and by the second winter nobody bought a box of plaice without asking after it.

On the last Saturday in February the ice machine packed in at four in the morning, and Kenny sat on an upturned crate with a torch in his teeth, rewiring the compressor while the lorries idled outside. Nell turned up at half five in her mother's coat, having heard the van from her bedroom window. She held the lamp steady without being asked and said the fish looked like it was swimming out of the D. He told her that was the general idea.
By seven the chiller was humming and the market was loud again. Kenny marked the morning's figures on the lid with the same biro, adding a small stroke under the word for every crate that went out sound. Nell watched him count, then took the pen off him and drew a second fish, swimming the other way, so the two of them faced each other above the letters.
He closed the lid over them and, for once, did not check the tally twice.
