Script 'Hello Sweetie' on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is raised with the index and middle fingers spread in a V against a dark background. The index finger carries the words Hello Sweetie in black cursive script, with a flourished H and a looping tail on the final letters. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the photograph is shot close up with a shallow focus that softens the background.

Dear Marguerite,

The wind has been at the lamp room glass for three days now, and I have stopped pretending I sleep through it. Mr Penhallow brought the post out on the Tuesday boat, wrapped in oilcloth the way you taught me, and your letter was the only thing in it that smelled of the harbour instead of diesel. I read it twice on the step before I could make myself go inside.
You asked whether the keeper's cottage still has the blue kettle. It does. I have been using it every morning to make the tea you swore was too weak, and I have decided you were wrong, though I will not write that in ink where the gulls can read it. The gulls read everything here. They sit on the rail outside the window and stare in at me like nosy aunts.
You will laugh, but I have started calling the light by the name you gave the cat, Sweetie, because it keeps turning round the same way no matter how the weather treats it. Hello, Sweetie, I say when I climb the stairs at dusk, and the lens flashes back as if it has been waiting all day for someone to say it.
Come in June, if the boats are running. I will leave the kettle on.
Yours, with ink on my fingers, Helen
