'Ello sweetie script on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand held in a peace sign shows black script lettering reading 'ello sweetie across the middle finger. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no visible shading. The background is dark and out of focus, and the red nail polish adds a small patch of colour against the skin.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, it's all that's left of the big top. Pearl Ambrose had the best patter on the whole Harrowgate circus, and she greeted every man who paid a shilling at the gate with 'ello sweetie, whether he wanted it or not. The words were painted in curly letters on a board by the ticket booth, and she had them inked across her middle finger too, so she could wave them at the crowd like a conjuror with a wand.

By the autumn of 1961 the gate had dwindled to a few farm lads and a widow who came for the lion, and the lion had gone deaf. The ringmaster, a man called Teodor Wick, sold the striped wagons one by one to a scrapyard in Leeds. Pearl stayed on. She rode the last bareback act herself because the boy who did it had run off with the cook's daughter, and she said a show with no greeting was just a field with horses in it.
On the final night there were nine people under the canvas. Pearl stood at the gap in the flap, two fingers raised, and called out to each one as they came in. They laughed, every one of them, because it was daft and it was hers. A little girl in a borrowed coat asked her why she greeted strangers like old friends. Pearl said strangers were only people who hadn't been told yet.
The tent came down at dawn. The board by the booth still shows the old words in faded paint, and the scrapman in Leeds will tell you the last thing he saw go up on the lorry was that two-fingered wave from the woman on the step. Mind the step on your way out.
